Attempt to prevent abuse isn't an attack on Catholics
As a victim advocate for children, I was dismayed by the Feb. 7 letter,''Catholic Church attacked, public schools protected.'' How is itpossible, after years of media coverage and victim interviews, thatsome people are still grossly uneducated on the issue of child abuse, especially as it relates to the Catholic Church?
The writer insinuates that the media and others vilify the church butfail to report on clergy abuse within other religious denominations andschools, even though the bulk of abuse is occurring in those places.
I doubt many would disagree that child abuse does, indeed, occuranyplace where adults have access to kids. What does, however, set theCatholic Church apart from the others is that it has managed toorchestrate the single largest systematic child sex abuse cover-up, ona global scale, in the history of the planet. Period.
As a survivor of child sex abuse, I take great offense to thecontention that those of us who support the extension or abolition ofthe statute of limitations are on some type of crusade against theCatholic Church. I am one of ''the people who want to throw out thestatute of limitations'' for child sex crimes.
Withoutcriminal charges, many perpetrators enjoy anonymity, living quietly inresidential neighborhoods. The writer suggested ''caps'' on monetarysettlements; this was actually suggested by many advocates last yearand is welcomed by most victims.
Keep in mind: Most victimswon't see any financial gain. Victims are more interested in protectingfuture generations of children from abuse than in windfall lawsuits.
