Description: Truth is needed for healing to happen
Article originally prepared on : 11 February 2008
Asa practicing Catholic and psychologist who has treated numerous sexualabuse survivors, I have been disturbed by the church's response tosexual abuse of children by its priests. It often appears that thechurch's hierarchy is more committed to protecting itself from theramifications of the truth becoming public than in helping the victimsof abuse by its clergy. The Milwaukee Catholic Archdiocese has spentmillions to keep the public and the victims in the dark about exactlywhat happened years ago.
The preservation of secrecy is a present-day repetition of pastmistakes. Secrecy and avoidance of accountability are ripping open thewounds of most or all victims of clergy abuse. By attempting to open upthe church's records, the victims are trying to do now what theycouldn't do as children: to make the truth known to protect others andto try to heal.
The archdiocese's hiding of the truth is at best insensitivity andcallous disregard for the impact of its actions on the victims. Thearchdiocese must open the files regarding its past handling of thesematters if it is sincerely committed to healing for the victims.Nothing short of this will do.
