UN urged to probe Church abuse

Avictims advocacy group has called for the United Nation's inquiry intoan alleged attempt by Vatican to protect the abusive clergy.

The Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP) on Mondayurged UN's investigation into what it dubbed Pope Benedict XVI andVatican officials' complicity in the matter, said the DPA reports.

The demand was made while His Holiness is expected in the United States on his first visit to the country.

On Saturday, activists, including the groups' members, gathered inWashington DC to protest what they called the clergy within the RomanCatholic Church's using their authority to sexually exploit children.

"There are predator bishops out there that no one is holdingaccountable for their actions, that's the job of the Pope," SNAP'soutreach director, Barbara Dorris said on the day.

Since 1950, Catholic clergy have been accused of thousands of cases of molestation.
