RALLY TO PROTECT OUR CHILDREN
Description:
Article originally prepared on : 16 August 2006
WEDNESDAY 16TH AUGUST, 12.30PM,
WESTERN AUSTRALIA STATE PARLIAMENT HOUSE
PLEASE FORWARD TO AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE
RALLY TO PROTECT OUR CHILDREN
Victim's of child abuse and their supporters will rally at State Parliament House
on
Wednesday, 16th August
to lobby for a public child sex offender register.
They want parliament to pass laws that will allow Western Australians to know if child sex offenders are living amongst them.
Calls for the register are based on the so called "Megan's Law" in the United States, although the proposed register would not contain the street addresses of offenders.
"Community notification would extend to area only details" said Michelle Stubbs, WA Spokesperson of ASCA, which is convening the rally.
"The level of community notification would be based on risk, with offenders deemed to represent the greatest threat being subject to the most active notification.
Juveniles who are convicted of the most serious sex offences would also be included."
While ASCA appreciates police concerns which would restrict access to a sex offender register to police alone, communities, and especially victims' families have the right to know if convicted paedophiles are living amongst them.
"The recent Bullsbrook case, where a convicted paedophile, was freed to live amongst his victims, was a classic example of the need to adopt a public register," Ms Stubbs said.
"There are 700 convicted paedophiles living in the community in WA and parents deserve to know who they are and where they are so they can protect their children."
The rally will also call for:
A review of sentencing for child sex offences
- Trial of a sex-based court
- Removal of the option of parole for child sex offenders who are deemed particularly violent or predatory
- Implementation of electronic monitoring for all convicted child sex offenders
- Establishment of child safety zones
- Development of an Amber Alert plan;and
- Adequate funding of the WA Police Service to implement new initiatives relative to child sexual abuse.
The rally starts at 12.30pm sharp on the front steps of Parliament House Wednesday, 16th August.
