November's issue of TIMsees Queensland's political system receive a roasting from leadingidentities on their way to a conference that will explore how, or if,the Smart State has reformed since the Fitzgerald Inquiry. And theUnited Nations criticisesQueensland over its continued detention of children in adult jails.

October, 2005

The October edition of TIM hasQueensland'snewly formed coalition heaping criticism on proposed Constitutionalchanges that may free the state government from a traditional check onits power. And a story reveals child offenders are still being lockedup in adult prisons, despite a 13-year-long promise by the governmentto deal with juvenile offenders as children.

September 10, 2005

The September edition of The Independent Monthlyreports on concerns that the checks which prevent the QueenslandGovernment from abusing its power are being further eroded by proposedchanges to the Constitution.Australia'sleading authority on parliamentary practice calls the changes – whichpotentially remove the Governor's reserve powers – "dangerous andunnecessary".

 

August 11, 2005

The Independent Monthly, in its August edition,reveals that the Queensland Police accept that the Heiner shredding mayhave to be revisited, while the CMC is now relying on the age of thematter -- rather than justifications based on legal reasoning -- toavoid reopening investigations. The CMC's current excuses are alsoheavily criticised by a former Solicitor for Queensland.

The June editionof The Independent Monthly provides further graphic evidence of theappalling treatment meted out to inmates of the John Oxley Youth CentreinBrisbane… years after the Heiner Inquiry into the centre was torpedoed andwhatever had been going on there was supposed to have been fixed.

The May edition of The Independent Monthlyreveals a former High Court Justice believes the excuse used bypoliticians to get away with the shredding of the Heiner documents was"erroneous", while the current Dr Death Royal Commissioner warns anyonelikely to be involved in his Bundaberg Hospital Inquiry not to shredanything. And the latest development in the sad story of the girl, who was pack raped in the John Oxley Youth Centre in 1988, is documented.

Rape Could Have Been Prevented

 

TheChair of the House of Representatives Legal and Constitutional AffairsCommittee of Inquiry into Crime in the Community, Bronwyn Bishop, saysthe rape of a girl reported on pages one and two of the August editionof The Independent Monthly  "could have been averted" if the Heiner Inquiry had not been shut down by theQueensland government in 1990. Death Threats

 

Female inmates ofBrisbane'sinfamous John Oxley Youth Detention Centre threatened to kill a15-year-old girl in custody to stop her pressing charges against astaff member she said had raped her on an excursion from the centre.For the story, click heading above.
