The Catholic Archbishop of Sydney, Dr George Pell, has corrected statements he made on 60 Minutes last night which he says were misleading about the Church's compensation of child sex abuse cases.

Archbishop Pell has again denied compensation offered to two girls sexually abused by a priest in Victoria was hush money.

In 1998 two Melbourne girls abused by a convicted paedophile priest were offered $50,000 under a compensation scheme set up by Dr Pell, who was then the Archbishop of Melbourne.

Last night Archbishop Pell told the program the offer required the victims not to public discuss the abuse.

"When a person accepts compensation from the Melbourne archdiocese no confidentiality applies," he said.

"To suggest that this is hush money is absurd."

Archbishop Bell has rejected calls for his resignation and says he has no objection to an independent inquiry into the allegations.
