Forgotten boys speak up
BOB Cox and Jim Smedley may be two of our "Forgotten Australians", but their childhood is something they have never forgotten.
The two men, now aged 64, first met when they were 13 and were placed in homes, including Riverview in Brisbane and Westbrook Boys Home near Toowoomba, in the 1960s.
There they and the other children in the homes endured terrible conditions, including brutal bashings and abuse.
Now, decades on and living in Rockhampton, they have found there are many others in the region just like themselves, who have the need to talk freely about their experience.
Both admit they kept to themselves even as adults, finding it hard to mix with people unfamiliar with their backgrounds.
"You feel at home with people who have been in your situation," Bob said.
Bob described those days as horrific times "“ not unlike a concentration camp "“ with minimal food and clothing as well as physical and mental abuse.
...........
"We were treated pretty badly, but there are a lot of other people the same," he said.
While some of those who had been in the homes turned to alcohol and drugs, Bob said there were plenty who chose suicide instead "“ even while in the home.
"We survived, but there were a lot that didn't. We have seen a lot," Bob said.
"Over the years we bottled a lot up, but it is good to talk.
"That is why I want to open a drop-in centre."
The drop-in centre will open its doors on Tuesday, April 13 at the Square Dance Hall on the corner of Fitzroy and Kent streets,
Rockhampton.
It will open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9am to 3pm.
