Frank Girardot: Confession column draws reader mail

Posted: 04/21/2010 03:33:14 PM PDT

Just after Easter, I wrote a column detailing my questions about the Catholic Church and its harboring of pedophile priests.

For the record, I am a Catholic. My opinion was that Catholics should consider boycotting Mass and send a wakeup call to Rome. It would show the Vatican we care about our faith.

Many of you have opinions as well, and wrote to tell me. Thanks for the letters. Here's an edited sample:

Confession Article

"While reading your article, I wanted to answer your question `So how does a good Catholic express his or her opinion?' My answer to the idea of boycotting Mass is that doing so is harmful to ourselves ... I believe a good response to sin committed by some in the church would be to instead join in celebrating the Mass sometimes during the week, in addition to Sundays.

JohnB: Your 'solution' will achieve absolutely nothing. You have only encouraged others to turn a blind eye to the problem. Your solution is dangerous and can only aid in prolonging the problem. You forgot the rule of law and appear to have no concept of crime other than through the religious concept. As far as being a good response to the global sexual abuse of hundreds upon thousands of women and children I would suggest that your attempt is a very childish in the extreme.

One Catholic's confession

"With all due respect sir, it is my obligation to `admonish the sinner' as the Catholic Church mandates ...

"As a practicing traditional Catholic and a 23-year veteran of law enforcement I too am outraged by the priestly scandals that have rocked our Church. I agree that justice should have taken its course for those abusers. What I disagree with is the manner in which Mr. Girardot suggests we try and get the Church leaders' attention. ... Mr. Girardot's suggestion that we do a Sunday boycott of Mass is outlandish and shows a total ignorance of his Catholic faith

... Who is the big loser in that deal? That's right, you are. God have mercy on us."

- R.D. Nava

SURVIVOR RESPONSES

JohnB: I hope no survivors have ever had a need to be provided justice during your time in law enforcement. Your inability to be able to separate church and state matters has been a significant part of the reason why law enforcement has failed victims of these crimes. With all due respect and unfortunately there is little of that available you forgot compensation and restitution towards the victims; apply the rule of law seems to be non existent in your catholic thinking - now there is a serious problem for all of us.

Another perspective

"Of course I am sickened by the things that some very sick people have done in the Church. This includes priests and laity; it includes other Christian denominations though for a good reason the focus has been on Catholicism. Sad to say there were sick individuals fearful of their sexuality who fled to an aura of celibacy thinking that this would help them to completely repress any and all sexual urges. But let me also say that your position in the column tends to lump thousands and thousands of good priests into the same category as those who were abusers. ... As a Passionist priest I do believe that out of this Good Friday there will be an Easter Sunday, a resurrection of love and truth and justice, if you will. We just have to give it a chance and not give up ..."

- Rev. Pat Brennan, CP Mater Dolorosa Retreat Center, Sierra Madre

SURVIVOR RESPONSES

JohnB: Even the most passionate plea can only repeat the fraudulent grooming and religious deception that was used against victims and their families. The real problem is that when there are good priests they have no credibility when they 'preach' outdated and outmoded concepts. While they continue to practice this mistake they will continue to damage their own credibility due to their own religious blindness. The very basis of the Catholic biblical/religious teaching method has been used for generations against children and families simply as a part of the churchs historical practice of 'religious' exploitation of its followers. For any priest to consider today that the Catholic church has any credibility or connection with spirituality is simply displaying the depth of their own deception. They are deceived by their own deceptions; they are defrauded by their own fraudulent actions; they have nothing of credibility to offer survivors or victims other than to 're-embrace' the church which abused them (often sexually as a child) and then subsequently denied them access to justice for the rest of their life. Many victims consider it to be a form of insanity, a form of grooming and simply another form of the fraud and deception which made them available for exploitation.

Easter Sunday

"As a survivor of Catholic Clergy Abuse I have often wondered how other Catholics get by on the holidays. For me my relationship with the Church during the last 40 years has always been a kind of dance, five steps forward and ten back. ... Forty-five years ago my siblings and I were victimized by a priest who we later found out had been moved from one Church assignment to another, in three different countries, leaving behind him a path of devastation and destruction.

"It seemed oddly fitting that three years ago the Catholic Church would hold my deposition on Holy Thursday and Good Friday. I don't remember Easter that year, but I do remember wondering if this was how Jesus felt as his accusers tried to destroy him.

"Best regards,"

JohnB:Did you find peace and restitution through the church or did you find this via some other means?
