Adults get abused, too

William Moyer's coverage of Protestant vs. Catholic child sexualabuse by clergy sheds light on one important part of this issue. Itdoes not acknowledge that vulnerable adults or late teens are alsooften victims, even though not legally classified as minors.

Inthe developmental arena, this group, along with the children, isclassified as "the little ones" also because of the great powerimbalance.

Some of us who have been doing the work of writing onthe topic of sexual abuse by clergy for many years have a strongtendency, based on anecdotal reports, to believe that the greatestnumber of Catholic victims are not children, but adult women who arespiritually and emotionally dependent. This is certainly true inProtestant circles.

Clergy abuse is an act of professionalmalpractice, no matter what the age of the victim. Moyer is one of myfavorite journalists. I'd challenge him to consider expanding hisinvestigation and definition of clergy sexual abuse.
