Senate calls for child abuse commission

Posted Thu Sep 20, 2007 9:46pm AEST

The Senate has called for a Royal Commission into child abuse and sexual assault, especially in institutions.

The motion's author, Democrats Senator Andrew Bartlett, says he is particularly concerned about children who are "under care".

Senator Bartlett proposed the motion today and it was agreed to unanimously.

"I followed that up with a question in Question Time of Senator Minchin, the leader of the government in the Senate, seeing whether the Prime Minister and the government and would act on the resolution in the Senate," he said.

"His response was just that the Federal Government had sympathy with the call, and as an act of good faith."

Senator Bartlett says it is time for Australia to recognise that child abuse and sexual assault are a widespread reality.

"We always isolate it down to individual crazy people, or individual segments of the community within churches or poor people in remote areas or Indigenous people," he said.

"We're always making it out like it's done by somebody else, but the fact is that it's part and parcel of the fabric of just about every community in the country."
