Article originally prepared on : 27 September 2007
Steven Boyden, who now lives in Georgia, targeted Bishop RichardMalone and the former priest, Ronald Michaud, in Kennebec CountySuperior Court.
Boyden, 37, contends the abuse happened in themid-1980s when he was 16 and living in Windham. Michaud is accused ofmolesting the teen while serving at St. Hyacinth's Church in Westbrookand again after being transferred to Aroostook County.
Boyden contends the diocese knew that others had accused Michaud of misconduct but continued to reassign him to new parishes.
TheRoman Catholic Diocese of Portland contends it became aware of problemswhen Michaud was accused in 1989 of offenses that took place inMaryland. Diocese officials say Boyden didn't come to them until 2002to report the abuse.
Michaud, who couldn't be reached forcomment, was one of six priests accused of sexual abuse who wereidentified for the first time earlier this year by Malone out ofconcern that could commit offenses while waiting for the Vatican tocomplete its investigation.
Barbara Dorris from the SurvivorsNetwork of those Abused by Priests urged any other victims to comeforward. "We hope that others who saw, suspected or sufferedinappropriate behavior by Michaud, or other clergy, contact police andget help," she said.If you wish to keep this article alive in the Internet Archive simply click the link below.
