Creditors committee formed in diocese bankruptcy

IOWA CITY, IA - Seven men were appointedtoday to a committee that will decide how the Roman Catholic Diocese ofDavenport will distribute its assets in its bankruptcy case.

Courtrecords filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the Southern District of Iowaonly name two of the committee members, Mike Uhde of Davenport and MikeGould of Bradenton, Fla. Both men have said they were abused by thediocese's priests.

The other five are listed as John Does 13, 18, 23, 55 and 65.

Beforedeciding how to distribute the diocese's assets, the creditorscommittee will determine what exactly those assets are. In courtrecords, the diocese has listed more than $9.1 million in total assets.

Thediocese filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Oct. 10 afterdetermining it did not have the money to settle the claims stemmingfrom its clergy sexual abuse scandal. Only three other dioceses in thenation have filed for bankruptcy.
