Qld police save Canadian abuse victim

The rescue of a sexually-abused Canadian child due to Queensland police acting
on an internet appeal shows cyberspace can be a victim's friend as well as foe,
a child protection advocate says.

Canadian authorities have revealed the child used the Google search engine to
send an email requesting help to Australian service Kids Help Line.

The message was then forwarded on to Queensland police's anti-online child
exploitation unit Taskforce Argos.

The child was traced to an address and placed under protection after Queensland
police alerted a US Federal Bureau of Investigation specialist team in
Washington, which determined where the message was sent from and informed
Canada's National Child Exploitation Co-ordination Centre.

The child typed in "kids help", found the site and sent a message saying "this
is what is happening to me, please help me so it doesn't happen anymore", the
Royal Canadian Mounted Police's Corporal Lana Prosper told Agence France
Presse.

Canadian media have reported the victim as being a girl living in the province
of New Brunswick.

Brisbane-based Bravehearts founder Hetty Johnston said the case showed while
paedophiles were exploiting the internet, it could also empower victims.

"The kids are getting more and more savvy and the internet, while it works
beautifully for the predators, also can work for child victims and for victims
generally," Ms Johnston said.

"What this shows is that there are two sides of every coin - it can also be
very effective for victims if they have the courage to speak out and a child in
Canada speaks out to an organisation in Queensland, Australia, and it helps.

"If we give the kids the means to speak out and act appropriately when they do
then kids will, hopefully, in greater numbers speak out."

She described the child's actions as "ingenious" and the Queensland police's
Taskforce Argos as "the best in the world".

Ms Johnston said Kids Help Line was the site that received the child's
desperate message, but the service wasn't immediately available for comment.

A Queensland police spokeswoman said she was aware of the incident and that
Taskforce Argos officers would comment at a later date.
