Former umpire faces child sex charges

AN Australian former international cricket umpire faces a string of sex charges for attacks on deaf children.

The former sporting official's case was heard today in a Brisbane court for a mention on charges of molesting and sodomising the children.

Among the 11 charges included five counts of indecent assault, five counts of unlawful anal intercourse and one count of indecent assault of a female.

No court date was set for the next hearing on the case.

Laws protecting the victims and the accused prevent the publication of anything identifying the man.

The sex charges are the worst to mar the international cricket world since former test cricket umpire Steve Randell was jailed for four years in 1999 on 15 counts of indecently assaulting nine girls.

All were aged 11 and 12, at the time of the attacks, when Randell was teaching in a Catholic primary school in Burnie, Tasmania, in 1981 and 1982.

He was released after serving about two years and nine months of the sentence.
