LOS ANGELES A judge overseeing a hugenumber of lawsuits claiming Southern California priests abused childrenhas set 20 of the cases for trial and put dozens of others on the roadto court.
Superior Court Judge Haley J. Fromholz also said yesterdaythat he will handle many pretrial decisions on what kinds of evidencecan be submitted in about 700 cases.A plaintiff's attorney saysthe judge will rule on decisions affecting more than one case ratherthan having the trial judges decide.Fromholz set trial dates in June, July and August for 20 suits against the L-A Roman Catholic Archdiocese.Thearchdiocese said in December it would pay 60 (m) million dollars tosettle 45 lawsuits by people who claim they were abused by priests.
