Judge orders Springfield Diocese to release documents to insurers

SPRINGFIELD, Mass The SpringfieldDiocese fails in its efforts to keep documents relating to clergy abuseclaims from its insurance companies.

A judge has ordered the dioceseto release thousands of pages in a dispute with seven of its insurancecarriers over settlements with clergy sex abuse victims.Thediocese sued the insurance companies to get them to cover the claims of57 people who allege they were sexually abused by priests.Theinsurers argued in court that about 75-hundred pages of documents willenable them to see how diocese handled allegations of sexual abuse bypriests.Berkshire Superior Court Associate Justice John A.Agostini did agree that some documents were protected byattorney-client privilege and do not have to be released.A spokesman says the diocese is reviewing the decision and may appeal.___Information from: The Springfield Republican, http://www.masslive.com/republican/index.ssf
