Sex offender trains priests
ALEX MITCHELL.  Sun Herald.  Sydney, N.S.W.:Mar 19, 2000.  p. 19

A CATHOLIC priest convicted of sexual assault is involved in the recruitment
and training of priests in the State's second largest diocese.

Father Ross O'Brien was convicted in Glen Innes Local Court in May 1993 of
indecently assaulting a 23-year-old hitchhiker he picked up between Lismore and
Casino.

The priest, then aged 57, pleaded not guilty but magistrate Chris Bone found
him guilty and placed him on a $100 good behaviour bond for 18 months.

In the latest issue of the Catholic Directory, Father O'Brien is listed as the
vocations director of the Armidale diocese, which includes Tenterfield,
Tamworth, Walgett and Moree.

He deals with people considering entering a religious order and is also
involved in "the continuing education of priests".

He transferred from Glen Innes to Armidale recently to become assistant to
Bishop Luc Matthys.

At the time of his conviction, Father O'Brien was supported by the then Bishop
of Armidale, the Most Reverend Kevin Manning, who is now Bishop of Parramatta.

"I must stress the point that the church understands human weakness and frailty
and is a forgiving church," Bishop Manning said in 1993.

"The finding (of the court) has certainly caused a great deal of stress and
embarrassment and many people are feeling disappointed and let down.

"We recognise and respect the decision of the court.

"It was well thought out and considered, and Father O'Brien is committed to
undergo a program of spiritual and psychological help."
