Mr Donohue
Description:
Article originally prepared on : 22 January 2007
I noted Mr. Donohue's statement "For the past five years, there has been a steady drumbeat of criticism aimed at the Catholic Church for allowing sexual abuse of minors to continue with impunity. Much of that criticism was right on target."
"a steady drumbeat" - obviously Mr. Donohue does not keep himself abreast of the many daily reportings of clergy abuse - a classic case of minimizing or understating to my mind.
"to continue with impunity" Here I believe is Mr Donohue's own view of the situation. He then again suppoorts this with "Much of that criticism was right on target".
Would Mr Donohue tell us of what actions he has taken to bring about a closure to the clergy abuse scandal? What actions he has taken to bring about a just outcome for those victims of clergy abuse?
A review of several hundred statements made by Mr Donohue shows him to be repeatedly in opposition to legislation, statutes and regulationswhich would empower or aid victims; aid in the disclosure of abuse; aid or assist in obtaining legal justice.
In fact Mr Donohue has on occasion shown a complete lack of understanding of victims and has taken the opportunity to denigrate individuals who have identified themselves as victims.
I would like to say to Mr Donohue that his work may appear just and fine to him, however there are those who have been traumatized for the greater part of their lives through clergy abuse, embezzlement and other clergy crimes who feel that an individual with such a wide range of opinions has yet to speak on the issue of advocacy for victims of clergy crime.
I believe it is time for Mr. Donohue to stand up and be counted in that debate and to put forward his views and opinions on that.
