(CBS4) A Roman Catholic priest currently in jail for raping ateenage boy in the 1980s has been defrocked by the Vatican, thearchdiocese announced Friday.
PaulWilliam Hurley, of Sandwich, will no longer be financially supported bythe archdiocese and will no longer be able to perform public ministry,according to the archdiocese statement.
Hurley will now only be allowed to offer absolution to the dying.
Hurleywas placed on administrative leave in 2001 after the alleged sexualmisconduct. In June, the now-defrocked priest was convicted ofrepeatedly raping a 15-year-old South Boston boy in 1987 and 1988 inthe rectory of Blessed Sacrament Parish in Cambridge, where Hurley wasassigned. He is now serving a four-year prison sentence.
Accordingto church law, a priest must be permanently removed from ministry if anact of sexual abuse of a minor is admitted or proves through a churchinvestigation.
"I again apologize for the suffering you andyour families have endured," O'Malley said. "I remain committed toproviding support for counseling and pastoral care to all who have beenharmed by clergy sexual abuse," said Boston Cardinal Sean O'Malley in astatement.
