Dean Arthur Schwartzmiller, 65, was convicted last yearon 11 charges of child molestation and one charge of possessing childpornography.
He had previous convictions for child sexual assault in other states.
When he was arrested at his home in San Jose in June 2005, police found detailed accounts of sex acts with hundreds of children.
The notebooks also contained pornographic photographs of children.
During the trial, Schwartzmiller said the memoirs were fictional.
But prosecutors said he had abused children for several decades and was one of the most prolific paedophiles in the US.
