After the service, the bewigged judges and barristers belted down the street to St James Anglican Church in Sydney's CBD for another service, followed by an ecumenical morning tea. The Great Synagogue and the Orthodox Church will followsuit.
According to the Catholic Church, the Red Mass is so-called from the red vestments traditionally worn in symbolism of the tongues of fire that descended on the Apostles.
The annual ceremony was, as usual, attended by men and women of disparate faiths, including Chief Justice Jim Spigelman, who is Jewish.
The first recorded Red Mass was celebrated in the Cathedral of Paris in 1245,but the event gradually fell out of fashion until 1931, when Sydney became the first English-speaking city to re institute the practice.
In his homily, Cardinal Pell reminded the congregation that lawyers have an extremely powerful position in Australia, not merely because of their different roles in administering justice.
"Lawyers also contribute mightily to public debate and the forming of public opinion, in the framing of laws and in ensuring that a proper separation of powers continues," he said.
"If we believe in God as creator, lawmaker and covenant maker, this has important consequences for public life. I ask you to ponder these consequences,defend and develop them, not because they are religious truths but because they are rational, useful for persons and beneficial for society."
