Sex Abuse Crisis - History in the Making - Will Our Children Witness Truths or Denials of Justice?
As President Bush stated in his mostrecent State of the Union Address, the No Child Left Behind Act, whichis up for reconsideration this year, has raised educational standardsfor educators, which are then passed on to school age children. Per thePresident, performance scores in the U.S. now reveal that overall Mathand Science scores have improved. This is definitely a positive stepforward; however, is the goal of a U.S. public education focused on theroles of Mathematicians and Scientists in the future or on the roles ofresponsible, accountable and dignity-respecting citizens? Our societycan achieve both objectives in educating our children; however, PUBLICPARTICIPATION IS DESPERATELY NEEDED!
As a society, we mustlook at the truths revealed since the clergy sex abuse crisis eruptedin 2002. It is obvious that past educational goals in the U.S. somehowfailed children and society. Evidence of this fact can be found byexamining the clergy sex abuse crisis.... think about it:
*** There is an attorneysome where in U.S. history that believed freedom of religion claimsallowed employees of religious institutions to commit sex abuse crimesagainst children and vulnerable adults, without facing criminal orcivil sanctions.
*** There is a religious leader some where inU.S. history who believed that guaranteed civil rights, freedom to besafe from sex abuse crimes, did not include children when the crimeswere committed by employees of a religious institution.
***There is a leader some where in U.S. history who believed freedom ofspeech, press and opinion includes "politically-correct" freedoms, asseen by the political party in leadership at the time.
***There are government, political and religious leaders today and in U.S.History, who had/have the authority to correct the wrongs revealedsince the clergy sex abuse crisis erupted; however, why are so manyelected officials delaying new legislation similar to California's 2003Sex Abuse Law, returning denied justice to victims of sex abuse crimes?
The No Child Left Behind Act is an example of leadershipattempts to improve the public education system; but, it cannot be theonly solution. Our children must be able to relate to curriculum duringtheir school years and the sex abuse crisis is just that. This is animportant element of the No Child Left Behind Act.
If oursociety does not confront the sex abuse crisis head-on, our childrenwill continue to watch adults squirm and avoid any references to thesex abuse crisis, while also watching government leaders avoidcorrective legislation, similar to California's 2003 Sex Abuse Law.
IfI were a teacher, I would communicate to my students the opportunitythey have today, history in the making, and open lines of communicationregarding the clergy sex abuse crisis. I would not be concerned abouttest performance scores. It is important to focus on personalconnections with students through communications in the classroom.Living in the United States is a privilege that requires respect. If Iwas an educator, I would show the documentary film, "Deliver Us FromEvil," by Amy Berg, in my classroom, followed by class communicationsinvolving the U.S. Constitution, Bill of Rights and abuses of freedomof religion. I would ask my students to write letters to legislatorsand religious leaders, encouraging them to exercise freedoms of speech, press and opinion, with responsibility, not abuse. "Deliver Us FromEvil" is a perfect visual tool to connect real-life history in themaking with government and history curriculum.
Rest assured,we should all be prepared for controversy in discussing apolitically-sensitive subject, the clergy sex abuse crisis. After all, effective communication is not just about giving information, it isabout sparking an interest in learning, connecting with students, providing opportunities to problem solve in life challenges.
Asa society, we are experiencing history in the making as we strugglethrough the clergy sex abuse solutions. However, we cannot continue todiscourage public participation and debate in matters of publicinterest and safety. It is time for all political and religiousinfluences to BUTT out of the crisis. Nothing stated herein willinterefere with the goals of the No Child Left Behind Act; however, wecannot forget our duty to think out of the box and walk the talk.Living in the U.S. guarantees certain freedoms, without interference.
Without justice there will never be peace and without peace, faith and our country's laws are empty.
With hope for all children and families,

As an amateur writer, my passion forthe courage of clergy sex abuse victims, their families and mandatedreporters, who made a choice to protect children, before their owncareer security and ego, has evolved over the past 5 years. My husband,Michael, is a former Catholic high school teacher and coach, who wasforced to make a career change without due process of the law. He willsoon complete his Masters Degree in Special Education, his new-foundpassion. Our children, Nicole, Rachel, Brent and Laurel are a gift tous and all who meet them. We pray our children and the world's childrenwill witness society correcting the wrongs committed against innocentchildren and families. Without justice, there will never be peace;without peace, faith and our country's laws are empty.
