I find it interesting that, in response to my tongue-in-cheek letterMarch 24, “Catholic Church apparently wants to keep some in the DarkAges,” I have received five phone calls in favor, one negative letterin the mail, and Mr. Al Chiappinelli’s reply in your paper. I amcompelled to respond to the latter.
If Mr. C. considers my letter “venomous,” he most certainly took hisreply out of consideration. This one has to be the best pronunciamentossince Dominic de Guzman spawned the Inquisition. As for facts, they arethere to be perused.
1. My comments regarding the sin of “excessive wealth” were notthere to impugn the wonderful, worldwide humanitarian doings of theCatholic Church, but only to ponder how another billion or so mighthave been better spent.
Attempting to reduce the sexual abuse of children by the clergy toan “acceptable percentile” is ludicrous. This has been going on forcenturies, and one victim will always be one too many.
2. As for the rant against stem cell research, I used the genericterm and never specified fetal stem cells. Perhaps I should even havebeen more generic with bone cells, T-cells, etc.
Best wishes from a recovering Christian.
