| Catholic enquiry commissioner to lead Brisbane Anglican probe
Peter O'Callaghan, QC, the independent commissioner whom the Catholic Church in Melbourne appointed to investigate similar complaints in Victoria, will lead the the Anglican Church's past handling of sexual abuse complaints in Brisbane.
Brisbane's Anglican Archbishop Phillip Aspinall announced the inquiry yesterday, and said it is to begin immediately. The enquiry follows months of claims that Governor-General Peter Hollingworth - Aspinall's predecessor as Archbishop of Brisbane - did not treat claims of sexual abuse seriously enough.
South Australia University professor Freda Briggs, an authority on children's welfare, will join Mr O'Callaghan.
The terms of reference are limited to how the Anglican Church in Brisbane previously dealt with complaints of sexual misconduct.
Dr Aspinall said the inquiry, first mooted in February, was not a witch-hunt against Dr Hollingworth or any other individual.
"I understand that Dr Hollingworth will cooperate with the inquiry and I hope and trust that's the case," he said.
He expected Mr O'Callaghan and Professor Briggs to report "reasonably promptly", but a November 29 deadline had been imposed.
