Child sex charges - Local priest faces court:[8 Central Coast Extra Edition]
TIM ELBRA.  The Daily Telegraph.  Surry Hills, N.S.W.:Oct 4, 2006.  p. 15

A CATHOLIC priest dubbed "King of the Kids" at a local parish sexually molested
four boys at a boarding school in Sydney, a court heard yesterday.

Paul Raymond Evans, 54, was stood down as a priest at Kincumber after being
charged in August over alleged child sex offences from 1986 to 1988.

Gosford Local Court yesterday heard he was previously acquitted of other child
sex offences.

Evans faced court on 11 charges of gross indecency with a male under 18 years
and eight counts of homosexual intercourse teacher to pupil.

The Saratoga resident, in dark glasses and with a thick beard, walked free from
court after his bail was continued yesterday.

The alleged incidents occurred while Evans was a teacher and dorm master at a
boys Catholic boarding school at Engadine. Four 14-year- old boys who boarded
in Evans' dorm were his alleged victims.

"There is a strong likelihood of a long period of incarceration should he be
convicted," police prosecutor Sergeant Bobbie Cullen said.

Police allege that Evans had sex with one student.

It is also alleged he fondled the boys' genitals and performed a sex act on
them. The boys were allegedly forced to perform the same act on Evans.

"The prosecution have strong evidence outlining a pattern of behaviour of the
accused where he has targeted vulnerable teenage boys while he was in a
position of authority," police allege.

Statements from staff and students at the school allegedly corroborate victims'
claims that Evans "treated them in an affectionate manner, crossing major
boundaries within a student/ teacher relationship".

In 1987, Evans allegedly smeared butter on a student's groin area and lay on
top of him simulating sex.

The priest is alleged to have supplied his alleged victims with alcohol on
several occasions.

Sexual acts allegedly occurred after the boys consumed the alcohol.

In 1986, Evans allegedly showered with a boy after going waterskiing. Evans
allegedly held the boy aloft so a cleaning lady could not see the boy's feet
under the cubicle door.

"In the shower cubicle, the accused fondled and performed ... sex on the
victim," police allege.

"The victim, who recalls thinking `just leave me alone', however describes not
wanting to ruin things for himself at [the school] ... so he just kept quiet
and put up with it."

Police opposed Evans' bail yesterday, saying he had contacted alleged victims
while facing previous charges.

Evans has worked as a priest on the Coast for 15 years. He will face Downing
Centre Court on December 7.
