Truth will rebuild trust in the church
I would like to address an article in the Oct. 29 issue of The Bladetitled "Pope says sex-abuse wounds run deep." Pope Benedict mentionedthe damage done to the standing of the Catholic Church and its clergyby the "egregious" clerical sex abuse crimes, stating that it wasurgent "to rebuild confidence and trust."There is only one way the Catholic Church will ever rebuild confidence and trust and that is with the truth.Given the overwhelming evidence of cover-up by the church hierarchy, itis unbelievable that even today, truth has taken a backseat. ManyCatholic faithful are afraid to even consider that "mistakes" have beenmade by the leaders of their church at the expense of the innocent andthe trusting.When you give so much of the power of your life over to an institutionthat tells you it controls the fate of your eternal soul, is it notyour right in return to expect nothing less than the truth?There are so many people who have been hurt and disillusioned by thechurch's less than truthful (dare I say deceitful) behavior and see, asPope Benedict stated, the damage that has been done.Sadly, many have walked away. But there are many who have chosen to stay and fight for the healing of the faith that we so love.We recognize that healing will take place only when church hierarchyaccept that the laity must be part of that process.
