Rape case officers face action

Rosanne Barrett and Margaret Wenham

December 07, 2006 11:00pm

TWO far north Queensland Child Safety officers must show cause why they should not be disciplined and possibly sacked after allegations they delayed action on a child rape case for three weeks.

Another male temporary worker has been sacked over the incident.

In May, a 10-year-old girl, who cannot be identified to protect her identity, was allegedly repeatedly raped and sexually assaulted in her remote community.

It is understood that another government agency notified the department with concerns about the girl, who had only recently returned to that community.

But an internal investigation ordered by former minister Mike Reynolds and handed down to Minister Desley Boyle found the office was slow to react to the complaint.

Action relating to such severe allegations should occur within 24 hours.

Three weeks after the initial concerns were raised, the girl was removed from the community and is now living in the care of Child Safety.

Meanwhile, three men and three juveniles have been charged with sexual offences including rape.
