Psychiatrist highlights flaws in church anti-paedophile plan

A Toowoomba psychiatrist says potential paedophiles will think twice about joining the Anglican Church when it introduces psychological tests on prospective new clergy.

The tests aim to weed out potential paedophiles, after the church was forced to pay compensation over the abuse of a child at a Toowoomba school.

But Dr Joyce Arnold says there are some flaws with the plan.

"I presume a psychological test is looking at thoughts and it's very difficult to really assess what people's thoughts are," she said.

"Paedophiles in particular aren't the kind of people that respect authority and they don't have remorse for the things that they do, so they're highly likely to lie.

"If you've seen a psychological test you can kind of pick what sort of answer you need to give."
