t's an adult's responsibility to protect children.
But there is not enough training for those on the front lines, dealingand working with children who may be victims of sexual abuse. Now,there is a local program that addresses that need, and it needssupport.
Stewards of Children at the Child Protection Center of Ross Countyoffers the most precious ammunition in the war on abuse - information.Teachers,after-school volunteers, coaches, members of the clergy - anyone whohas regular contact with children and may be in a position to point outthe red flags of abuse need to have the information.
According to the center, one in four girls and one in six boys are sexually abused. These numbers are far too high.
Sometimes,victims become survivors and overcome their abuse. Often, they becomeabusers, turn to substance abuse or become suicidal, according toDarkness to Light, an organization promoting public awareness aboutchild sexual abuse.
Nearly 700 children were abused in RossCounty last year. Even one case of abuse is far too many, and the 690that were reported may have been far fewer than what really occurred.
Chancesare there were adults in these children's lives who were stunned theywere being abused. If those grown-ups had the knowledge they shouldhave, they could have recognized behaviors in children being hurt byadults.
When it comes to child abuse of all types, the responsibility lies on all adults' shoulders.
