It's all over the news once again - child sexual abuse scandals involving priests. Sexual abuse by priests, pastors, ministers, youth group leaders, choir directors or any other church leader is awful all by itself. To equate the abuse with homosexuality, or to claim that exposing the abuse is like a hateful holocaust, is to muddy the waters in ways that are not helpful. So let's be clear about a couple of things.
Child sexual assault occurs most often (though not exclusively) between an adult male and either male or female children. Some perpetrators prey on both. Pedophilia is not considered a healthy, mature interest in the sexual expression of love, either heterosexual or homosexual. It's not even an adult choice to have casual sex, either heterosexual or homosexual. The sexual attraction to children is considered a mental disorder by clinicians and acting out on that attraction is a criminal offense. If it's a criminal offense for the mail carrier to sexually abuse children, or for a teacher, or scout leader, or a neighbor who holds no position of authority at all to sexually abuse children, why is it not a crime for clergy to do so? The answer, of course, is that it should be no different.
