I grew up in Dorchester in the 50's and although raised as a Protestant I know something about the Catholic Church just by sheer osmosis. Catholicism saturated the cultural atmosphere of post-WWII Boston.
Later in life, as my conservative leanings deepened, I felt a growing attraction to the Catholic Church's orthodoxy and its cultural conservatism and I actually toyed with the idea of converting.
And then the Boston clergy sex abuse scandal exploded, casting a glaring light into the ugly workings of the church hierarchy and its heartlessness toward innocent children.
It's public knowledge that Bernard Law shuffled pedophile priests from parish to parish despite knowing the threat they posed to children. One of the rationales he used in his process of sending priests away to sundry rehabilitation centers and then re-deploying them "“ sort of a grotesque priest recycling program -was the Church's teaching that redemption is possible no matter how great the sin. In doing so he ignored the dicta of modern psychiatry which show that pedophilia is practically incurable, and showed more tender concern for the sinners than those innocent children sinned against.
