The world is agog at the criminal, self-serving ways the cardinals and bishops of the Catholic Church have protected their organisation and clergy over revelations about paedophilia. The reports are not "petty gossip" or "idle chatter" as Rome would have us believe. The Pope is presiding over a spiritual earthquake which promises to devastate his institution.
Priests are well represented in the ranks of the paedophiles. They are stand-out performers. The church has to ask itself why its holy men have descended into the sewer, and be prepared to face unpalatable answers.
The church has insisted its holy men and its leaders live an unnatural way of life. They must deny themselves the comfort and challenge of a partner and family. They must suppress any hope of an intimate sexual communion. This is not reflected in any law binding the leaders in the original Christian community. It was born of a distorted, Gnostic contempt for the beautiful flesh fashioned by God.
