Pope Benedict erred in scandal

Archbishop Timothy Dolan really believes that the pope is being unfairly targeted. The pope is firmly tied to the clergy abuse scandal whether Dolan likes it or not. Benedict, as Cardinal Ratzinger, was head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith, the office that oversees reports of abuse, and he did nothing. In 2001Cardinal Ratzinger reaffirmed the validity of Crimen Sollicitationis, which imposes the "Secrets of the Holy Office" on anyone with knowledge of priests violating the confessional or sexually abusing children, meaning they are silenced forever. In 2002, Pope John Paul II said,"There is no room in the priesthood for those that would abuse children." Ratzinger did nothing. Archbishop Rembert Weakland of Milwaukee asked for help deciding what to do with a priest who had abused 200 deaf children, a heinous crime of the worst order, yet Benedict did nothing. This is not conjecture; the documents are part of a court record. Pope Benedict had and has full knowledge of the clergy sex abuse scandal. All he has done is throw words at it.
