Church secrecy must end

In response to "The time is ripe for real reforms" (April 11), by Robert Nugent, he does not present the root cause and honest look at the pedophilia criminal activity within the Catholic church.
In January 2002, the Vatican published rules for dealing with pedophile cases. These rules were approved by Pope John Paul II, and published by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger (now Pope Benedict XVI), through the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. According to the Vatican: pedophile cases are subject to "pontifical secrecy," only Catholic priests should handle these cases, judges and lawyers should be Catholic priests, cases should only be handled in Church tribunals, and victims must file complaints before age 29.
Catholic leaders, starting with the Pope, are only concerned with the church's financial wealth and totally disregard the safety of children with the above Vatican policy. The Catholic hierarchy is filled with deceit and insidious corruption starting with Pope Benedict and downward to priests.
The Web site www.bishopaccountability.org does a tremendous job at presenting actual written correspondence of pedophile cases within the Catholic church. Most disturbing, the Catholic clergy who did victimize children did not just hurt one child in many cases but many children. Robert Nugent tries to paint an innocent picture of Catholic clergy with his statistics, reality reveals otherwise. Approximately $3 billion has been paid out to abuse victims in the United States.
When children are being exploited and harmed for life, as in the case of the Catholic church, reason must prevail over religion. Reason is public law enforcement and not "pontifical secrecy." If the Vatican continues with its secrecy policy, I look forward to the day the Catholic church is sued into extinction.

When these crimes at the local level are exposed then the secrecy and the human rights abuses at that local level will be squashed also as that is the most effective way the press and the people can show their support to those who have been and continue to be abused as these are the crimes the church does not want you to hear and read about .
