The Pope is coming: Malta hides its man-junk

Humans have inhabited areas of Malta, a group of seven islands in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea, since approximately 5200 BC. The giant blue penis, however, didn't arrive until 2006. And with Pope Benedict XVI dropping by this weekend, some citizens feel it's time to engage in a little diversion called hide the weenie.

Okay, bad choice of words.

After Pope Force One (Forceus Oneus?) touches down, one of the first things the pontiff will encounter on his trip from the airport is a monument called Colonna Mediterranea, a sculpture that "“ according to some "“ has been the source of vulgar jokes ever since the phallic-resembling statue was erected in the town of Luqa four years ago.

And that's waaaay beyond that four-hour warning after which you're supposed to call your doctor.

In a statement issued to the Malta Independent Online, mayor John Schembri said that due to the presence of the penile statue, the Pope's visit would be "an embarrassment to the people of Luqa and the Maltese, in general."
