Atheists Demand Pope’s Arrest In UK

Richard Dawkins, the British scientist, proponent of atheism, and author of The God Delusion, has followed fellow atheist author Christopher Hitchens (God Is Not Great) in calling for the Pope's arrest during a planned visit to the UK in September. After years of covering up child abuse scandals involving clergy of the Roman Catholic Church, they claim Pope Benedict XVI has committed "crimes against humanity," specifically citing the recent unveiling of a letter signed by him asking for leniency in the charge against an American priest who molested two boys in 1985. This was written while Pope Benedict was head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith, the body responsible for investigating abuse cases, and that recently posted their Guide to Understanding Basic CDF Procedures Concerning Sexual Abuse Allegations on the Internet.
Dawkins and Hitchens have commissioned barrister Geoffrey Robertson and solicitor Mark Stephens to build a case against the Pope, hoping to use the same legal principle that allowed the arrest of Augusto Pinochet when he visited Britain in 1998. The barrier of diplomatic immunity, which is applied to all heads of state, should not be relevant in this case as the Vatican is not recognized as a sovereign state by the United Kingdom or the United Nations. In the UN it is granted observer status that only allows the Vatican to be signatories on treaties and to vote at conferences.
