Archdiocese will hear abuse complaints

The Archdiocese of Agana yesterday released a statement reiterating the church's policies on investigating claims of sexual abuse by clergy and the church's commitment to protect its children.

According to the church, it strictly adheres to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops' Charter on Sexual Abuse, as ratified by the Holy See.

The statement was released in response to recent allegations of sexual abuse by priests on Guam. In October, Vice Speaker Benjamin Cruz said the church wasn't dealing with those allegations effectively, and last month, Support Network of those Abused by Priests Regional Director Joelle Casteix visited Guam to meet confidentially with alleged victims.

A victim of sexual abuse by a Catholic choir teacher in her childhood, Casteix said the meetings would offer local victims the opportunity to see they aren't alone as abuse survivors.

But local church officials have repeatedly stated their doors are open to hearing about such allegations.
