Description: Some Catholics are thick.
Re: "Now I know how Saudi women feel" (Opinion, April 13).
While I share Maureen Dowd's disappointment and anger regarding the abusescandals in the Catholic Church, her suggestion that celibacy is a rootcause leaves me less convinced.
If it's true that that the problem and handling of pedophilia in the church is due in large part to theCatholic clergy having "closed themselves off from women and everythingmaternal," then why over the past decades have there been countlessreports of child abuse in non-celibate religions and institutions, including our schools and sporting organizations?
Such sweepingconclusions do a disservice not only to all of Catholic clergy but toall religions and to those who choose and faithfully live out the chaste life.
