Vatican struggle to save its image may be too late

As the child-abuseallegations against the Catholic Church continue to build, with hundredsof victims speaking out, the Vatican has drastically alteredits response.

At first, officials andcardinals accused pro-abortion, pro-gay-marriage, and other groups ofplotting attacks against the pope and the church. More recently, thecomplaints of an anti-Catholic campaign have been replaced by newpromises. "The Vatican has gone into full-fledged damage controlmode in the priest sex abuse scandal ahead of the pope's first foreigntrip since it erupted," reports the Associated Press. "Officials arepromising surprising new initiatives. The pope's personal secretary isspeaking out. And bishops around the world are being told toreport abuse cases to the police."

Some of the new initiatives being considered, according toVatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi, include a "deepening ofthe measures of prevention and response" to abuse and more papalmeetings with victims. Victims in Malta, where the pope is due for avisit this coming weekend, are asking for a papal audience and apology,though it is unclear whether their request will be granted.
