As Pope Benedict prepares to go to Malta, criticism of his actions both within and with out the Church are growing. While the Vatican is trying to repair the damage done by the scandal, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has endorsed Child Abuse Prevention Month while, apparently, doing a little as possible to actually solve the problem other than remain silent while the Pope's people try to shift blame on homosexuals. The USCCB drew up a list of ten ways to prevent child abuse among the clergy. Among those mentioned are background checks.
There are two problems with that idea. The first is that the people who are doing the background checks are the people already employing the person involved and, because of the secrecy surrounding the Catholic Church, it is unlikely that parents will get access to a priest's records. The second, and this has happened in Vermont repeatedly, is that the background checks may show nothing if the person has never been caught or only just starting to abuse.
At the same time as this is going on, Father James Scahill of St. Michael's Parish has called upon Pope Benedict to resign. Father Scahill stated "Any who deny the truth deny Christ, and we, as people, must reclaim our church, "Scahill said in a phone interview last night. "Those in authority must be willing to admit to the truth, admit their horrific crime of coverup, and beg for forgiveness, and until that happens, there will be no healing."
