Shoot the messengers

As a former Roman Catholic monk, I am appalled at the church's reaction to the continuing maelstrom of malice perpetrated on innocent children in a context of priestly perversion by some members of the Catholic clergy.

In its efforts to deflect criticism and to sanitize a tarnished image, the church has unleashed the Vaticanistas to attack the news media. Instead of heeding the message, they try to shoot the messenger, which has only resulted in further disfavour to their eroding reputation.

Until the church fully recognizes the superiority of civil law over canon law, it will continue to be just another accessory after the fact in matters of criminal sexual abuse.
