Ireland Asks Church to Pay Half 1.4 Billion-Euro Abuse Bill

April 16 (Bloomberg) -- Ireland's government said the country's religious orders should pay half of a 1.4 billion-euro ($1.8 billion) bill for child abuse compensations.

While the orders have already offered about 476.5 million euros in cash and property, the government said in an e-mail statement published late yesterday that they should pay an additional 200 million euros.

The Catholic Church has been grappling in recent years with allegations of abuse by clergy in countries ranging from the U.S. to Ireland. Pope Benedict XVI on March 20 apologized to Irish abuse victims and said Catholic authorities committed "grave errors." The Ryan Report, published last year, said abuse in church-run homes in Ireland was "endemic."

"The government is very conscious of the ongoing pain suffered by so many further residents and reiterates once again its apology to them," Prime Minister Brian Cowen's ruling coalition said in the statement.

In 2002, the government created the Residential Institutions Redress Board to make awards to people abused in schools and institutions. By the end of 2009, it had made 12,929 payouts averaging 63,210 euros, the board said on its Web site.
