Clergy abuse survivors meet in Italy ahead of the canonization of Mary MacKillop
Today Australian clergy sex abuse survivor Mark Fabbro traveled to the Northern Italian city of Verona to meet with a number of clergy sex abuse survivors who have recently come forward with "Christ like courage", given Italy's deep political, cultural and historical allegiances with the Catholic Church.
Mark took the opportunity to relate to these Italian members of the newly formed group "La Colpa" (The Blame) the recent story of Mary MacKillop.
"Survivors need to know the long history of abuse and how one daring woman within the church spoke out to protect children, and how the church responded". Fabbro said.
Two of the survivors were from the school "Antonio Provolo Institute for the Deaf" where 24 priests have been accused of abuse and systemic rape over many decades.
They appeared intrigued yet puzzled when told about the pending canonisation of a woman who had been excommunicated for blowing the whistle on a predator.

These survivors, unable to speak out at the time of the rape made them particularly vulnerable targets and the crimes perpetrated upon them particularly grievous.
To think now that they have decided to confront their injustices and that they can not publicly verbalize their outrage here in Italy is simply appalling.
Their coming forward together is a big move for them, but this will likely further marginalize them. The ostracism and rejection experienced all those years ago by Mary MacKillop is being surely shared by these people today.
Mark Fabbro, a visual artist, will be exhibiting his spiritual work at a castle in the city of Ferrara from the 23rd till the 31st October.
