Description: Sylvia. In 1969, aged 17, I was groomed and sexually assaulted in the organ loft of St John's Cathedral in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.
********************** Hi Fred Here is one document about an offender in the Anglican Church who has never yet been convicted. This phone memo was tabled as "Document 32" in the Callaghan/Briggs Enquiry (2002) into the Anglican Diocese of Brisbane's Handling of Sex Abuse Claims. The memo says that Michael Kelly phoned the Archbishop's secretary after an article appeared in the newspaper about my abuse, to tell the Diocese that his mother had disclosed abuse as a 12 yr old by the same man. She told her son, an Anglican priest (now silenced and won't pursue the matter) shortly before she died. When I wrote to the family to express my condolences (our families had been loosely connected) I received a "rap over the knuckes" from the Enquiry. Virginia's husband had only found out because of my letter. He was not pleased and wanted it hushed up. Although my complaint against the same man (Robert Boughen) was also tabled by that Enquiry, no action was taken. Two years later, at my continued complaints, the Diocese appointed an independent investigator, a Barrister by the name of Rebecca Treston, to investigate my complaint. Her finding: that my complaint was substantiated on the balance of probability (2004). Then the Cathedral Chapter sent me a letter saying they had to decide on disciplinary action for the perpetrator (I'll send it later). They said in order to decide on the action, they needed to satisfy themselves of my allegations. Thus I was put through a very unpleasant meeting with the Church lawyers Flower & Hart. The upshot: I got nothing, not even an apology for destroying my chidlhood. They knew about Virginia's memo. It is a badly kept secret in Brisbane that Robert Boughen is an abuser. But because he has an OBE and is so high up in society, I have no chance. When Boughen retired, mention was made of allegations. His lawyer was Terry O'Gorman who defends paedophiles for a living. O'Gorman said the Rebecca Treston finding was a "miscarriage". That's why the church can get away with ignoring me now. I will send the latest email from the diocese, telling me to go away. On the SNAPAustralia website in "Sylvia's story" there is some additional material you ought to see, plus some links to govt enquiries that ended up being squashed.
