The scandal seems like it could not get worse, yet it continues to do so. The sexual abuse of altar boys by Catholic priests has shamed the clergy and the entire Catholic community. What first seemed to be a handful of isolated incidents has been exposed as a worldwide epidemic of abuse and secrecy, and many Catholics are struggling to maintain faith in their priests and in the Church as a whole.
No, Catholics are not inherently bad. Priests are not bred to be pedophiles or sexual predators. Nothing about the core faith, beliefs and rituals of Catholicism can be blamed or used to explain this horrible crisis. However, some measures can be taken to prevent sexual abuse from running rampant within the clergy.
First, priests should be allowed to marry. Priests today typically begin their seminary training in their late teens and early twenties, but in the past, and in other parts of the world, men have entered the priesthood during their early teen years when puberty and sexuality are concepts that have yet to be fully grasped. These men are taught by the church that their natural sexual urges must be stifled. They are surrounded by young boys and men and taught that they must not view women as sexual beings. Abstinence is a core oath of priests, and this can be damaging.
